SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS AND PERFORMANCES CARRY THE DAY
FOJ’s first major event since last spring put the spotlight on the two local colleges whose students provided continuous live jazz for The Muck’s 2021 Arts and Music Festival.
Sunday, May 2–That’s the day when talented college musicians performed live jazz at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center. The date marked The Muck’s Spring Arts and Music Festival from noon to 4pm, and Friends of Jazz provided the music. This outdoor event featured Fullerton College and Cal State University, Fullerton’s jazz bands performing a variety of jazz with their big bands, combos and solo jazz vocalists. Each band played for about two hours on the Muck’s outdoor amphitheater stage.
The venue provided art exhibits along with some craft fair booths. FOJ had a table and a display area with our banner, thank-you letters from grateful student recipients and membership sign-ups for anyone wanting to join FOJ.
During the event, Friends of Jazz awarded $21,000 in scholarships to 23 student musicians from the two schools. And, for the first time, the program was called The Bill Klinghoffer Scholarship Awards, so named after one of the two main founders (Bill Klinghoffer and Nick Batinich) of the organization 22 years ago.
